Eight great New Year’s resolutions for 2013

The grapes have dropped in Old Town Temecula, signifying the beginning of the New Year. Since 2012 didn’t see the end of the world as we know it, with any luck we’ll recover from the fiscal cliff with no more than a few bumps and bruises.

Now, after a holiday season filled with cheer, tasty treats, and calorie-overload, ’tis the season to make some life changes yet again! Whether tried and true or new to you, here are eight great New Year’s Resolutions for you and yours.

Get In Shape

It’s that time of year again to think once again about improving your health. Also, it’s never too early to consider bathing suit weather is just around the corner for Southern Californians. Consider training for a 5k … or beyond or get in shape under the broad, beautiful skies of Temecula wine country. Why not Zumba at the local club? At the very least, get out and take a walk with a loved one or friend and get your heart pumping.

Balance your Budget

Check your financial health for the New Year. As the bills come in from Christmas, it is time to shore up your finances. Look for ways to reduce monthly expenditures by re-evaluating cell phone or home telephone plans. Ask yourself, do you really need every pay television channel on the market? Or would a Netflix subscription, or a once-a-week trip to the Red Box do the trick? Find ways to trim those nickels and dimes back into your wallet.

Get Involved in Your Community

Do you want to do something to give back? Get involved in your community, whether through the local charitable organizations such as Western Eagle Foundation or the Our Nicholas Foundation or volunteering at your children’s school. January is a national month of service. Find ways to get involved in making your community a better place.

Find a hobby

We spend so much time finding activities for our children, but when is the last time you got excited about something other than Pinterest or Facebook? Think about what you used to like to do as a kid. Did you love bike riding? Or perhaps playing an instrument was your thing? If you’ve always wanted to go horseback riding, but never had the nerve to try, now’s your chance. Enrich your year with new experiences.

Take a Vacation or Stay-cation

Southwest Riverside is the ideal jumping off point for many places in the world. It’s a great time of year to start researching summer vacations or even consider traveling close to home. Consider locations such as Temecula wine country, Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead or Idyllwild for a quick mountain getaway.

Read and Relax

Time at home is a precious commodity, and often it gets frittered away on chores, and the dreaded “to-do” list. This year, take some time to read a good book, work in your yard and drink in the  Southern California sunshine whenever possible. Vitamin D, after all, is a natural remedy for keeping colds at bay.

Reconnect with loved ones

Next time you head out, leave your mobile device behind. Take time to reconnect with family and friends—in person, not on social media. At the very least, remember to look up from your mobile and share a smile.
