The Pointer Sisters rock the house New Year’s Eve at Pechanga

Many fans celebrated the New Year by looking back to better days when the Pointer Sisters planted their sassy selves on the Pechanga stage and delivered a thrilling 90-minute set on New Year’s Eve.

Gliding out onto the stage in glittery gray gowns, original group member Anita Pointer, joined by Issa Pointer and Sadako Pointer, proved timeless with vibrant vocals and energy from the start with “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves” before segueing into the lighthearted “He’s So Shy.”

Demonstrating the group’s renowned versatility in musical tastes and genres, the ladies swayed their way through a soulful “Hot Together,” belted a bluesy, gospel-inspired “Happiness” and offered the deliciously funky, wickedly syncopated “How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)” that underscored the trio’s tight musical timing.

Swathed in a hot pink stage light, there was the sensual “Slow Hand” and an Aretha Franklin tribute with “Chain of Fools” for longtime fans, along with a performance of the group’s first Grammy award winner –  the country-themed “Fairytale.”

As divas of stage and song should, the ladies scurried off while the band played on to slip into something “more comfortable,” then emerged in colorful fringe mini-dresses that shook and shimmied throughout the remaining set of high-energy hits.

“Fire” revved up the crowd, but “I’m So Excited” had many dancing in the aisles with abandon, followed by the “Neutron Dance” and a joyous encore performance of “Jump (For My Love).”

Highlight of the show?

While each of the “sisters” held her own, delivering pitch-perfect range and style, nothing could match when the three lifted their voices together, showcasing soul-stirring harmonies that rocked the house.
