Winds gusting at as much as 70 mph lashed the Southland early today and about 50 mph in certain sections of the Angeles National Forest off the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) freeways tonight.

Gusts of 70 mph were recorded by the National Weather Service at Camp Nine in the San Gabriel Mountains, 67 mph at Chilao, which is also in the San Gabriel Mountains, 66 mph in the Malibu Hills and 37 mph in Saugus.
A high wind warning was issued, reminding the public to “be alert for flying debris” and for drivers to “keep eyes open for fallen trees and downed power lines.”
Most of the high winds will be gone by 2 p.m. Thursday Jan. 3, followed by a few days of slightly warmer weather, but it will become colder again by early next week, according to National Weather Service weather specialist Stuart Seto.
Temperatures will rise to the high 60s by week’s end, and be in the low 60s by early next week, Seto said.
