Rancho Mirage: Man poses as landscaper for alleged misdeeds

A Cathedral City man who allegedly posed as a landscaper in a Rancho Mirage gated community was arrested today on suspicion of involvement in two burglaries.

Robert Newton

Robert Newton, 21, was arrested about 5 a.m. when sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant in the 31100 block of San Ardo Avenue in Cathedral City. The warrant was pursuant to two residential burglaries committed in Rancho Mirage on Monday, sheriff’s Sgt. Brad Farwell said.

Deputies found items stolen in the burglaries when they served the warrant, Farwell said.

“Prior to committing the burglaries, Newton was seen by residents in the gated community going door to door claiming to be a landscaper and asking if the homeowners needed any yard work done,” Farwell said. “It is believed Newton was going door to door to determine if residences were occupied.”

Newton was booked into the county jail in Indio, bail information wasn’t immediately available.
