Firefighters sent a helicopter today to rescue a hiker who fell about 30 feet over an embankment in the Idyllwild area, a county fire department spokeswoman said.

The male hiker was reported injured about 9 a.m. on Shadow Oak Trail near View Rock in Pine Cove, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.
According to SWRNN reporter Jenny Kirchner at the scene, the man sustained a compound fracture to one of his lower limbs and was airlifted by a Cal Fire helicopter to Keenwild Forest Service Station where Idyllwild Fire was waiting to transport him to an area hospital for treatment.
Multiple Cal Fire engines responded from Pine Cove, Idyllwild, Garner Valley as well as the Riverside County Sheriff and Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit.
The victim, who was not identified, remained in contact with Perris Dispatch and the search and rescue team by cell phone until they were able to locate him.
Pine Cove is an area northwest of Idyllwild.
