Authorities identified Jose Apreza, 53, as the man found in an open field near Perris on Dec. 29.

Investigators are still working to determine how Apreza died.
Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies were called out to the area on Dec. 29 shortly before 1 p.m. Family members said the man was missing for most of the day after taking his pit bull out for a walk.
Apreza’s pit bull was shot and killed by a deputy after the pit bull attacked deputies. Apreza was found near Evans Road and Orange Street.
