Riverside man leads authorities on chase through Jurupa

A Riverside probationer suspected of driving while on drugs and leading sheriff’s deputies on a chase in a stolen car was jailed today in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Luis Enrique Covarrubias, 32, was booked early Thursday following his arrest on a host of alleged offenses that include reckless driving, possession of stolen property, being under the influence of a controlled substance and violating his probation.

A sheriff’s sergeant on patrol Wednesday night spotted a motorist who appeared to be driving erratically and tried to pull him over at the corner of Golden West Avenue and Mission Boulevard in Jurupa Valley.

The driver, later identified a Covarrubias, sped off and lead authorities on a chase through surface streets and a nearby freeway before ending up in Riverside, according to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Justin Rowan.

Covarrubias pulled over at Magnolia and La Sierra avenues after driving over a spike strip that was placed on the ground by Riverside police officers, who helped in the pursuit, and allegedly displayed “symptoms consistent with the use of a controlled substance,” Rowan said.

Inside the car, officers found methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and stolen mail that included checks, social security cards and identification cards believed to have been taken in Riverside County, Rowan said.
