Authorities today identified an Indio man who was killed when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving crashed in the desert near Mecca.
Sergio Hernandez, 21, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 7 p.m. Sunday near Coachella Canal Road, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau.

According to the preliminary investigation, Hernandez was operating the ATV without a helmet when he “lost control and struck (a) dirt hillside.”
The crash was being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
