A man was behind bars today for allegedly stabbing and carjacking a motorist who had just fatally struck a teenage boy and stopped to help.
According to Cathedral City police Sgt. Julio Luna, a man was driving a Dodge Ram truck south in the 37450 block of Cathedral Canyon Drive around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 8 and struck a 17-year-old boy who was in the road.
The motorist stopped to help the boy and called 911, Luna said.
“As he waited for police to arrive, the driver was assaulted by an unidentified male,” Luna said. “The suspect then took the Dodge truck and fled from the area.”
Police later found the truck in the 31500 block of El Pueblo Trail.
Jose Matsu, 19, of Cathedral City, was arrested and identified as the suspect in the stabbing and carjacking, Luna said.
The driver of the truck was stabbed once and transported to Desert Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The teen he struck was pronounced dead at the scene.
Luna said no criminal charges were anticipated against the motorist for striking the teen, noting that alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
