Cathedral City: Car crashes into fire hydrant

A crash damaged a water pipe in Cathedral City today and crews were expected to shut down one lane Monday to permanently fix it, a police sergeant said.

No injuries were reported when a car struck a fire hydrant near the Applebee’s restaurant on Date Palm Drive and released a large amount of water onto the roadway, Cathedral City police Sgt. Scott Sharpe said.

The crash led to temporarily cut off water service to one business.

Traffic was opened up by 6 a.m. today, but Coachella Valley Water District work crews told police the damage done to the pipe was worse than expected. They would return Monday to permanently repair the damaged pipe, the sidewalk and a nearby roadway, Sharpe said.

The job, which was expected to take most of the day, would also require shutting down one northbound lane of Date Palm Drive between 33rd Avenue and Ramon Road, Sharpe said.
