Twelve vehicles were also impounded during the checkpoint in the 1500 block of Fifth Avenue that began at 11:05 p.m. Friday and ended today at 3 a.m., said San Diego police officer Mark McCullough.

One arrest was also made for reckless driving after a motorist turned his vehicle around and drove the wrong way without his headlights on, in an attempt to avoid the checkpoint, McCullough said.

The police officer said 912 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, with 515 of those vehicles being screened by officers. Twenty-eight of those motorists were detained for a further evaluation of their sobriety.
