Idyllwild’s honorary mayor will celebrate his birthday today with cake, pizza — and dog treats.
Dozens of people and their pets are expected to turn out to congratulate Maximus “Mighty Dog” Mueller on turning 12 and making it through the first half of his term in good health.
A birthday celebration is planned in the Idyllwild Nature Center at noon for the golden retriever mix, who coasted to victory in a fundraiser last June sponsored by the Animal Rescue Friends.
Fourteen dogs and two cats competed for the honorary title, with people donating in the name of whichever canine or feline they preferred. The pet that generated the most bucks — in this case, Max — was declared the winner.
Since then, Max and his owner, Phyllis Mueller, have been conducting an active campaign to sell Idyllwild as an idyllic setting for “meetings, conferences and vacations.”
Mueller told City News Service in September that anyone who wants to plan an event in the mile-high town nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains would receive the royal treatment from Max and his associates.
Today’s birthday party will feature a host of edibles and snow sledding outside the Nature Center.
“For my birthday, I want to see you, and petting. That’s ALL that I want,” a message from the mayor’s office stated.
