A large winter storm in the western Pacific Ocean could cause some dangerous conditions along Southern California beaches this weekend.

Ocean swells were at 3-5 feet in height this morning, but should grow to 8 feet Sunday, the National Weather Service said in a statement.
Large swells with 24-second intervals should arrive today, the NWS said, while a slight Santa Ana condition will minimize chop in Santa Monica Bay.
That combination could mean large, but infrequent, breakers will suddenly appear and soak dry sand, the NWS said. Beaches and jetties with western exposures are particularly at risk for a sudden run-up.
That means strong “surging-type conditions” with six-foot waves are possible.
“Breakers will inundate previously dry shores and overtop jetties without warning,” the NWS said.
