Five young hikers got lost during a trek at Cleveland National Forest at dusk but were found about a mile from the main gate and flown to safety, a Riverside County sheriff’s sergeant said today.

Members of the sheriff’s Jurupa Valley station received a call Saturday at 6:49 p.m. from a hiker Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Davis identified as 22-year-old Jessica Flores.

Flores said she and her four hiking companions became lost when darkness fell.

A sheriff’s helicopter spotted the group on a mountain top near the main gate, Davis said.

No injuries were reported as the last hiker among the group was flown off the mountain at 10:17 p.m., Davis said.
