A homeless woman shot on an Indio street was hospitalized today in what police called serious but stable condition.
“We still don’t know what happened,” Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron told City News Service. “The investigation is ongoing.”
According to Guitron, officers were called to the intersection of Van Buren Street and Dr. Carreon Boulevard about 7:25 p.m. on Sunday Jan. 20 to investigate a shooting.
Guitron said they found a woman, known to be homeless, with a single gunshot wound to her lower body.
She was rushed to a hospital and underwent surgery.
Investigators have not been able to confirm the details of what transpired.
“She was possibly out there with somebody, but we don’t know who,” Guitron said.
Witnesses told police that a dark-colored vehicle — possibly a Chrysler PT Cruiser — was seen racing from the scene westbound on Dr. Carreon Boulevard.
Anyone with more information was urged to call the Indio Police Department at 760-391-4057.
