Armed suspect shot by police in Indio

An Indio man shot by police in Indio was hospitalized in serious condition today, a police spokesman said.

Guadalupe Rivera, 32, was shot on Valencia Street between Monroe and Sun Gold streets about 9 p.m. Monday, Indio Police Department spokeswoman Ben Guitron said.

Someone reported a man in dark clothing, carrying a gun and a backpack, he said. Three officers found a man matching his description at Sun Gold and Hoover Street and “an officer involved shooting incident occurred when the three officers shot the suspect, who was armed with a gun,”

Rivera was hospital in serious, Guitron said. The three officers involved were put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, which is police department policy.

Guitron said Rivera has a history of mental issues, public intoxication and was listed as a suicide risk.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting, Guitron added.
