The world’s top-ranked tennis players will compete in the 2013 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in March, tournament organizers announced today.
Players on the men’s side include No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic, defending tournament champion and No. 2 Roger Federer, 2012 U.S. Open champion Andy Murray, ranked third, No. 4 David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal, ranked fifth.
Players on the women’s side include defending tournament champion and No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka, and Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Angelique Kerber, ranked second, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Other players scheduled to compete include men’s No. 6-ranked Tomas Berdych, 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro 7-ranked, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ranked 8, Janko Tipsarevic ranked-9 and Richard Gasquet, 10.
Additional players in the women’s field include 2011 French Open champion Li Na, ranked No. 6 and the seventh- through 10th-ranked players, respectively: Sara Errani, 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, 2011 U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur and Caroline Wozniacki.
More than 300 tennis players will complete, including nine former BNP Paribas Open champions and 13 Grand Slam champions.
More than 30 countries are represented in both the men’s and women’s draws.
Americans include 2012 finalist John Isner, Sam Querrey, Mardy Fish, Brian Baker, Ryan Harrison, Varvara Lepchenko, Sloane Stephens, Christina McHale, Jamie Hampton and Vania King.
The BNP Paribas Open, scheduled March 4-17 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, is the largest combined two-week event in the world for the Association of Tennis Professionals and Women’s Tennis Association, according to organizers.
