Organizers of an event scheduled a week from today to match up San Diego’s homeless with social and health services put out a call for about 200 more volunteers.
The seventh annual Project Homeless Connect is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m next Wednesday Jan.30, at Golden Hall in downtown San Diego.
Last year’s event served 941 homeless men, women and children.
Participants can get health screenings, flu shots, dental exams, haircuts, legal aid, housing counseling and other services, according to the San Diego Housing Commission.
According to the commission, volunteers are needed to escort guests through the auditorium to help them connect with the services they have requested.
Volunteers will also help register homeless attendees, serve food, sort clothing and perform other important tasks.
Nearly 200 San Diegans have already signed up to help, but a team of more than 400 is needed to make the event a success, according to the commission. People who want to sign up can do so on the commission’s website at sdhc.org.
The agency is helping to run the event along with the Family Health Centers of San Diego, St. Vincent de Paul Village and the Interfaith Shelter Network.
Mayor Bob Filner and his fiancee Bronwyn Ingram, along with City Council President Todd Gloria, are the honorary chairpersons.
