Palm Springs: Caretaker accused of embezzling from elderly man

A 31-year-old man who allegedly used the debit card of the older man for whom he was caring to make his own purchases was behind bars today.

Gavin Scott Crawford was arrested last Thursday in the 700 block of South Riverside Drive and pleaded not guilty on Monday to a felony charge of embezzling from an elder at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, according to Palm Springs police and court records.

The alleged victim, who was in poor health, hired Crawford as a live-in caregiver and allegedly gave Crawford cash, checks and his debit card to pay for necessities.

Last March, Crawford allegedly used the debit card to charge Internet purchases for himself, Palm Springs police Capt. Dennis Graham said.

He said detectives started investigating and tracked Crawford down last week.

Crawford is being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning in lieu of $25,000 bail, and is due back in court tomorrow, according to jail records.
