A car theft investigation in Temecula led sheriff’s deputies to an ex-convict who was arrested for allegedly stealing two vehicles, a sergeant said today.

Coty Lee Carter, 24, was arrested Friday for his alleged role in the thefts.
Deputies said the case began Jan. 29 when a Temecula homeowner reported that someone had entered his Corte Arroyo Vista home through a window and stole one of his cars from the driveway. A loaded handgun was also taken from the home, Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin McDonald said.
Deputies spotted the stolen car in the parking lot of the Margarita Summit Apartments in Temecula and obtained a search warrant Friday. Deputies also found a second car that had been reported stolen, along with other property that was taken in a separate burglary, McDonald said.
Carter was booked for suspicion of several charges that included possession of stolen property and being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Carter remained behind bars today in lieu of $35,000 bail, online jail records showed.
