A woman pushing a 13-month-old child in a stroller was struck and killed by an SUV in San Diego’s Black Mountain Ranch neighborhood, and identified today as a nanny.
Monserrat Mendez of San Diego, 41, was pushing the baby in a stroller in a marked crosswalk on Camino Del Sur at Via Verrazzano about 11:45 a.m. Friday, San Diego police Officer Frank Cali said.
The child, whose name was not released, remained hospitalized in critical condition today, Cali said.
Both Mendez and the baby, who was secured in the stroller, were struck by a Toyota 4Runner headed north on Camino del Sur.
Mendez was thrown during the collision and the stroller was pinned under the SUV.
According to broadcast reports, an unidentified female cyclist who witnessed the accident stopped to render assistance, and pulled the child from the smashed stroller.
Both victims were taken to the hospital, where Mendez was pronounced dead, Cali said.
An autopsy has not yet been scheduled.
The driver of the SUV stopped and has not been cited or charged pending completion of the crash investigation, Cali said.
