Two South El Monte High School students suffered severed fingers during a game of tug-of-war played as part of Spirit Week activities celebrating homecoming, it was reported today.

The students, a boy and a girl, were injured during the lunchtime activity at the campus on Monday, El Monte Union High School District Assistant Superintendent Edward Zuniga told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
Zuniga said he did not know how many other teens were participating in the tug-of-war. The girl is a senior and varsity soccer player, and the boy is a football player, the newspaper reported.
Their names and ages were not released, nor were other details of their injuries.
Firefighters were sent to the school at 1001 Durfee Ave at 12:20 p.m., Monday Feb. 4 and paramedics transported the injured students for hospital treatment.
It was unknown if the fingers could be re-attached.
School district officials will conduct a review to determine if there will be a change of policy regarding such activities, Zuniga said.
