A head-on crash Wednesday evening on Grand Ave. in Lake Elsinore slowed traffic and sent three people to the hospital with injuries, it was reported.

According to California Highway Patrol officer Brian Keene, the collision was first reported at 6:35 p.m. at Grand Ave. and Arbolado Lane.

Keene said a man driving a small work truck was stopped in the northbound center turn lane on Grand Ave. attempting to make a left turn on Arbolado Ln. when he was struck head-on by a driver in a red Honda Civic.

The driver of the Civic, an 18-year-old female, was driving southbound on Grand Ave. when she collided with the pickup truck.

Keene said the young woman, whose 13-year-old sister was a passenger in the car, told officers she was looking over her shoulder and attempting to merge into the traffic lane when she rammed into the truck.

All three victims were transported to local hospitals with injuries Keene described as minor to moderate in severity.

While the cause of the crash is under investigation, Keene urged drivers to “exercise caution when using center turn lanes.”

The center turn lanes cannot be used for passing cars and are for the purpose of making a left turn only.

Additionally, motorists should not utilize the lanes beyond 200 feet, he said.

Traffic lanes were opened by shortly after 8 p.m., allowing commuters to pass freely.
