Motorcyclist severely injured after running red light in Little Italy

A motorcyclist ran a red light in Little Italy and collided with a fire truck, which caused the rider serious injuries, a police officer said.

The fire crew was headed south on Columbia Street with the engine’s emergency lights and siren on shortly before 2 p.m., according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

As the truck entered the intersection of Columbia Street and West Hawthorn Street on a green light, a 55-year-old man on a Honda Shadow motorcycle who had been headed west on Hawthorn Street ran a red light at the intersection and struck the engine, Cali said.

The motorcycle rider sustained serious internal injuries and was taken to a hospital, Cali said.
