CHP: Driver killed in big rig crash near Coachella not seatbelted

A 35-year-old truck driver who died in a crash east of Coachella on Tuesday wasn’t wearing a seatbelt when he plowed into the truck in front of him, the California Highway Patrol said today.

Lain Torres of San Bernardino died at the scene of the crash, which happened about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday on westbound Interstate 10 east of Coachella.

The tractor-trailer he was driving was carrying produce when it crashed into the rear of another truck in the same lane, according to CHP Officer Joe Zagorski.

Torres’ big rig veered off the road and flipped over, he said.

The driver of the other truck, 45-year-old Alberto Recendez of Hesperia, wasn’t hurt, Zagorski said.

The right lane of westbound I-10 was closed for several hours.
