A suspected drunken driver ran over a mattress on the Ramona Expressway, causing him to lose control and smash head-on into another car on the opposite lane, a California Highway Patrol officer said today.
The driver, a 22-year-old Temecula man whose full name was not disclosed, was westbound in a 2004 Pontiac when he dragged the mattress some distance and then veered across the expressway west of Martin Street, California Highway Patrol officer Artemio Gonzalez said.
His Pontiac plowed into a 1991 Nissan sedan that had been headed east on the Ramona Expressway. Dispatchers received a call reporting the collision at 11:47 p.m., Friday Feb. 15.
Four people were trapped in the two wrecked cars, and firefighters used a hydraulic device to pry the cars open, the Riverside County Fire Department reported.
The driver of the Nissan, a 51-year-old Lakeview resident, suffered major injuries. Both he and the passenger in the Pontiac were sent to Riverside County Regional Medical Center, Gonzalez said.
The Pontiac’s passenger, a 25-year-old person from Nuevo, was briefly knocked unconscious and suffered moderate injuries.
The Pontiac’s driver suffered minor abrasions. He was arrested and booked for suspicion of felonious drunken driving, Gonzalez said.

When are we going to stop with the charges of 2nd degree murder, or involuntary manslaugter? These Drunk drivers know before they take that drink of the day that they are going to have to drive somewhere, or drive home and still they DRINK. Does someone who drinks for a few hours and then gets behind the wheel of a car know that people get killed every single day, numerous times, in our County? Well yes they do!
Does that mean that driving drunk and causing a collision that harms someone or kills them is premediated? Well yes it does. EVERYONE knows that driving drunk can kill people!
It is premeditated, it needs to be charged as that Mr. DA, and the Jury needs to find guilty for EACH MURDER. It is not 2nd degree murder, and it is not involuntary if they knowingly drink and know it can kill someone later if they drive. That is why they never serve more then 2 to 4 yrs for killing a family of 4 or 6, or 8. It is not seriously charged, or sentenced as MURDER 1.
This guy killed someones son, someones father, husband, best friend? Injured how many others and he should only spend 2 to 4 yrs in jail?
