“Jack The Giant Slayer” sat atop the nation’s list of most-popular movies in the U.S. and Canada today, with a $28 million debut weekend.
About 12 percent of the gross receipts were turned in by Imax theaters, said movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at Hollywood.com Box Office.
“Identity Thief” was in second place, with $9.7 million this weekend and $107.4 million over its four weeks of showings.
A pair of premiering movies held down the third and fourth slots: “21 And Over” with $9 million in estimated sales, and “The Last Exorcism Part II” with $8 million in receipts.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies, as estimated by the studios and collated by Hollywood.com, were “Snitch” ($7.7 million), “Escape From Planet Earth” ($6.7 million), “Safe Haven” ($6.3 million), “Silver Linings Playbook” ($5.9 million), “A Good Day To Die Hard” ($4.5 million) and “Dark Skies” ($3.6 million).
