A 24-year-old El Cajon man was fatally injured in a head-on collision in Jamul and died in a hospital a day later, authorities reported today.
Carlos Lerma was driving on state Route 94 at Peaceful Valley Road at a high rate of speed when he crashed shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. Lerma was not wearing a seatbelt, authorities said.
He was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital following the crash with “multiple traumatic blunt force injuries,” the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.
His condition declined and subsequent evaluations revealed cerebral edema and brain death, officials with the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
He died about 6 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
