A man was struck by a vehicle and fatally injured today while walking in the carpool lane of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway near the Orange (57) Freeway connector.
A motorist traveling northbound on the 5 Freeway in the carpool lane about 4:30 a.m. was unable to avoid the pedestrian, said California Highway Patrol Officer Armando Garcia.
“The driver did hit the brakes; there are skid marks at the scene,” he said.
It’s not clear how the man got onto the freeway.
Authorities did not find a disabled car nearby, Garcia said.
The motorist who struck the man stopped and called police, Garcia said.
Authorities were working to determine the man’s identity, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
