A 23-year-old man was behind bars today for allegedly using a stun gun on a woman, choking and hitting her and trying to sexually assault her in Blythe.

The attack at a residence in the 300 block of South Fourth Street in Blythe was reported about 9:20 p.m. Saturday.

The victim, whose name was withheld, went to the residence of Martin Suro Jr., a longtime friend, to do school work earlier that night, Blythe police Lt. Robert Mathews said.

As the victim was leaving, Suro “unexpectedly assaulted her with an electric stun gun,” Mathews alleged. “The victim attempted to fight the suspect off, but was choked almost to unconsciousness. Suro repeatedly assaulted the victim, both by hitting and with the stun gun.”

Mathews said Suro used the stun gun to try to incapacitate the woman before the attempted sexual assault.

Investigators served a search warrant at Suro’s residence and arrested him on Sunday, according to Mathews and jail records.

Suro was in custody at the Blythe Jail in lieu of $55,000 bail and scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at the Blythe Court, according to jail records.
