A unique pairing between a local micro-brewery and a breast cancer support center is promising to make a difference in people’s lives while quenching thirst.
Refuge Brewery’s head brewer, Curt Kucera is whipping up a concoction that has people on the edge of their seats waiting to try the soon to be released pomegranate saison.

In addition to the rich red fruit, the beer is also being brewed with hibiscus flowers.
“I for one can’t wait to taste it,” San Diego resident Hilary Binder exclaimed. “I bet it will be refreshing and delicious.”
As one can imagine, the beer will have a slight pinkish hue which will compliment the pink theme of breast cancer awareness.
“The saison will have slight floral notes and a tart finish,” Kucera explained. “A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this beer will be donated to Michelle’s Place.”
Breast cancer hits home at Refuge Brewery as Kucera’s wife, Diane found out she had breast cancer nearly two years ago.
“After being told I had breast cancer my outlook has changed,” Diane said. “What really hit me was sitting in the doctor’s office listening to a conversation the nurse was having with a woman who thought she had cancer.”
Diane added the woman was petrified because she had no money for a mammogram and was all alone.
“I knew then I had to do something,” she explained.
As the group of friends were planning to start-up Refuge Brewery, it was clear to Diane that she wanted to give back to the community and Michelle’s Place was first on the list.
Michelle’s Place is a Temecula based haven and resource center for women battling breast cancer. The organization offers support and education in addition to wellness programs.
“We decided we would do an event at the brewery every year to celebrate my Survivor Anniversary,” Diane said. “Also, Curt decided he would produce a special beer for that weekend for everyone to enjoy and make people aware of Michelle’s Place and what they are all about.”
Enter the “Poker Night” coming up to benefit Michelle’s Place where the newly-brewed pomegranate saison will be unveiled.
The event is being held from 8 p.m. – 1 a.m., Saturday March 16 at Refuge Brewery.
Tickets to the event are $100 per person and include two drink tickets, dinner and entry into the poker tournament.
