Police today sought a man who tried to kidnap a 12-year-old boy from Parnell Park in Whittier.
The crime occurred about 7:25 p.m., Tuesday March 5, Whittier police Officer Brad White said.
Police said the case does not appear to be related to an attempted kidnapping in February.
“The victim … told officers that he was playing on the swing set and his older brothers, ages 13 and 14, were playing on the basketball courts nearby when he was attacked,” White said.
“He said the (suspect) came up from behind him, and placed his hand over his mouth, and put him in a chokehold,” White said. “The victim told the officers that the male subject told him not to make any noises as he attempted to pull the young boy off the swing set.”
The boy somehow alerted his brothers, White said.
“They ran over and started punching, kicking and screaming at the suspect,” White said. “The suspect eventually let go of the victim and ran westbound through the park and into a residential area, while the three boys ran eastbound toward their home.”
The suspect was described as Hispanic, about 30-40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a stocky build.
He was unshaven, and had a scar on his right cheek.
Anyone with more information about the crime was urged to call police at 562-567-9270.
