Palm Springs: Motorist seriously injured in DUI crash

A Palm Springs man was behind bars today on suspicion of driving under the influence and causing a collision that seriously injured a 73-year-old motorist.

Carlos Randolfo Alvarez, 51, was hospitalized for several days following the Feb. 26 crash on South El Cielo Road.

The other driver, a Palm Springs resident whose name was not released, remains hospitalized in serious condition, Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said.

A witness told police that the suspect’s Toyota Tacoma sideswiped a vehicle around 4 p.m. that day near South El Cielo and East Ramon Road.

The pickup truck then veered toward a curb on the west side of South El Cielo and then into the northbound lanes, colliding head on with a northbound Toyota Prius driven by the 73-year-old motorist, Kovaleff said.

Alvarez was booked on Thursday at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, with bail set at $1 million. He was expected to be arraigned on Monday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, according to jail records.
