A wanted parolee led Palm Springs police on an 80 mph car chase, and later punched a police dog during a failed attempt to evade capture, a sergeant said today.
An officer saw the suspect, later identified as Steven Anthony Hernandez, 23, run a red light at East San Rafael and North Indian Canyon drives shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said.
The officer tried pulling the motorist over but he sped off.
The pursuit abruptly ended at the north end of Calle De Loro, north of East El Alameda, where Hernandez bolted from his car and left his female passenger inside.
Hernandez resisted efforts to arrest him, which prompted officers to use a police dog, Kovaleff said.
Hernandez allegedly hit the dog during a struggle but was eventually arrested.
The Cathedral City man was held for suspicion of violating his parole and harming a police dog.
Hernandez was being held without bail, Kovaleff said.
No crashes occurred during the chase and Hernandez’s passenger was interviewed and released, Kovaleff said.

Hope the police Dog bit the heck out of this idiot. They run like this putting so many lives at risk and they will end up being caught anyway. What part of their brain is not working to tell them this?
