A former Whittier resident is coping with the apparent murder of her small daughter and the suicide of her husband in a small village in Ireland, it was reported today.
Clarissa McCarthy, 3, was apparently drowned in the harbor at Ballydehob, Ireland, before the father, Martin McCarthy, 50, killed himself, the Whittier Daily News reported today.
The newspaper said paramedics tried for more than an hour to revive the girl, but were unsuccessful.
Her mother, Rebecca McCarthy, had married the farmer after first meeting him on a school trip at age 16.
After graduating high school under her maiden name, Rebecca Cejnar, she moved to Ireland and eventually married him, six years ago, the Whittier Daily News reported.
Martin McCarthy had been a committed bachelor and community stalwart in the West Cork village, playing Santa Claus at Christmas parties and serving as the local secretary for an Irish political party, according to the the Whittier Daily News.
The marriage had reportedly foundered, and Rebecca McCarthy had talked about moving to the U.S. with the couple’s only child, the newspaper reported.
The apparent murder-suicide was Wednesday, and the funerals were Friday, the newspaper reported.
