2013 Riverside County History Day Competition, awards ceremony set for March 16

Students throughout Riverside County will participate in the 30th Annual Riverside County History Day Competition Saturday, March 16, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Martin Luther King High School, 9301 Wood Road, Riverside.

The award ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the King High School auditorium.

The theme this year is “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.” Entries are judged with three criteria: historical quality, quality of presentation, and adherence to the theme.  The work must be completely done by students.

History Day competitions started in September at the school district level. This year, 200 students are competing at the county level with 121 entries in the various categories.

Alvord Unified School District

Beaumont Unified School District

Coachella Valley Unified School District

Corona-Norco Unified School District

Grace Prep

Lake Elsinore Unified School District

Moreno Valley Unified School District

River Springs Charter School

Riverside Unified School District

Sycamore Academy

Categories include the following for junior division (grades 6-8) and senior division (grades 9-12):  documentary, performance, exhibit, paper, and web site.  Students in grades 4-5 compete in a 2-D display category.  Categories open to the public for viewing include performance and documentary.

The exhibit hall will be open to the public from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The winning teams will advance to the National History Day-California State Competition April 26-28, 2013, in Sacramento.

The national competition is scheduled for June 9-13, 2013, at the University of Maryland, College Park.
