Carlos Alberto Sabio, 37, stepped in front of the northbound commercial truck near Sixth Avenue in the northern outskirts of downtown San Diego about 6:45 p.m., Thursday March 14, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office and California Highway Patrol.

He died at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators Sabio had been walking backward along the right-hand shoulder of the freeway, facing traffic, before holding up his arms and walking into the path of the semi.

The medical examiner has not ruled on whether the San Diego resident’s death was an accident or suicide.
