Coachella police arrested two men following a short pursuit that occurred after a failed traffic enforcement stop.
The incident occurred around 2:21 a.m. in the area of Frederick Street and Avenue 52, where police had been attempting to investigate a gunshot sound that came from nearby, according to a Riverside County sheriff’s report.
Mario Hernandez, 34, and Arturo Hernandez, 35, were both arrested after failing to stop their vehicle when requested to by police officers, according to the report.
They led officers on short pursuit that ended when they reached a cul-de-sac. Both individuals fled from their darkly-colored SUV, the report said.
Officers arrested Mario Hernandez without incident and found a recently fired shotgun inside the vehicle, Sgt. Adam Elders said.
Officers had to scour the local area to find Arturo Hernandez, who was arrested for evading police in a motor vehicle, possession of cocaine, conspiracy and negligent discharge of a firearm, according to Elders.
It’s believed that a third suspect may still be at large, Elders said.
The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Coachella Police Department at 760-863-8990, or through Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP.
