Firefighters were dispatched at 3:55 p.m. Friday to a brush fire along Highway 74 on the Santa Rosa Indian Reservation, south of Idyllwild and east of Hemet, where the car and remains were found.

Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Wallace Clear said investigators were unable to identify whoever was inside what appeared to be a severely burned 1990s Ford Mustang.

An investigation was ongoing in what the sheriff’s authorities believed was suspicious death, Clear said.

Sheriff’s deputies asked anyone with information about the remains or car to call investigators at the sheriff’s Hemet Station at 951-791-3400 or dispatchers at 951-776-1099.
