‘Oz’ remains great, powerful at the box office

“Oz The Great And Powerful” continued its dominating reign at the nation’s movie theaters, and has a $281.8 million gross worldwide, a movie analyst said today.

The Disney prequel to the iconic 1939 “Wizard Of Oz” was estimated by Disney to sell about $42.2 million worth of tickets this weekend in the U.S. and Canada.

Its domestic gross over two weeks of exhibition was estimated at $145 million.

“The Call” opened above projections, analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, with a $17.1 million debut.

And “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” opened in third, with a $10.3 million premiere.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films, as estimated by the studios and collated by Dergarabedian, were “Jack The Giant Slayer” ($6.2 million),”Identity Thief” ($4.5 million), “Snitch” ($3.5 million), “21 And Over” ($2.6 million), “Silver Linings Playbook” ($2.6 million), “Safe Haven” ($2.5 million) and “Escape from Planet Earth” ($2.3 million).
