In the next few weeks, the district will launch a public participation and recruitment effort to fill the position, gathering feedback from stakeholders.

The announcement was shared with school staff and site administrators on Wednesday.

In an email to staff about his decision, Wood prefaced it by saying, “As many of you know, my background prior to becoming a principal was as a head football coach. My passion for coaching kids in a competitive environment is something I’ve sincerely wished to rekindle.”

Wood continued, “After much reflection, I have accepted a position as a teacher and varsity football coach in another school district, which I will begin at the conclusion of the school year.”

District Superintendent Dr. Doug Kimberly issued a statement to site administrators yesterday on Wood’s accomplishments and good standing with the district, “I have come to know Gordon as a respected leader with a true passion for education. His positive influence on students and staff and service to our district are equally commendable.”

Mr. Wood has served as principal of Cottonwood Canyon Elementary School (CCE) for the past three years, and previously served as principal of William Collier Elementary for four years.

He began his administrative career with LEUSD as the Dean of Students at Terra Cotta Middle School in January of 2004. From July 2005 until June 2006, he served at Assistant Principal at Butterfield Elementary School.

He was promoted to principal of William Collier Elementary in July 2006. In July 2010, Wood was appointed principal of Cottonwood Canyon Elementary.

Prior to joining LEUSD, Mr. Wood served as a math teacher and varsity football coach for Helix Charter High School, La Mesa, California, in the Grossmont Union High School District.

Wood praised staff in his announcement saying, “I am forever grateful for the wonderful teaching and learning at CCE that I’ve witnessed every day. I look forward to continuing to work with a great staff, and watching and supporting all the great things you do for kids!”
