The California Chamber Orchestra will be “Seeing Red” in a concert planned for 7:30 pm. on April 6 at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater, it was recently announced.
“Our whole season has been about exploring the relationship between color and music,” said California Chamber Orchestra Artistic Director and Conductor Dana Zimbric in a released statement. “We began last fall with autumn colors, then experienced the glittering silver and gold of the Baroque. Our last concert saluted Benjamin Britten with some of his melancholy music that left us feeling blue.”
Classical guitarist Fred Benedetti will be on hand, performing with the orchestra on Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre.”
“We’ve all heard that ‘music hath charms to soothe the savage breast,’” Zimbric said. “But just as often, music incites our passions. The music on this concert will be familiar, yet it always leaves us feeling just a bit breathless.”
“We know that Rodrigo wrote this work for the great guitarist Andres Segovia,” Zimbric said. “And we can be pretty certain that Segovia is the gentleman referred to in the title. I know that Fred Benedetti’s beautiful playing will evoke all the emotion of this romantic, passionate work.”
Works by Gluck and Mozart will also be included in the program.
“I chose to highlight two dances from Gluck’s opera “Orpheus and Eurydice” because the story screams of love and passion,” Zimbric said. “Orpheus literally went to the depths of Hades to rescue his one true love, only to be foiled at the last possible moment.”
The Mozart work is his Symphony No. 41, also known as the “Jupiter.”
“Mozart, of course, lived just 35 years. And he crammed more living and more passion into that short lifetime than most people who live twice as long. This is Mozart’s last symphony, and I think it’s a colorful way to end this season,” Zimbric said.
Tickets for “Seeing Red” are $30 for adults and $25 for seniors. With each adult or senior ticket, you may request up to two free tickets for students 16 and under.
Student rush tickets will be available on the day of the concert for $10, subject to availability. Patrons of Orchestra Nova San Diego can exchange their unused concert tickets for free admission to the concert.
