Authorities released the name today of a 21-year-old Valley Center man who was fatally struck by a motorist in the rural North County town.
Raymond Melendez was struck while attempting to cross Valley Center Road near Old Road around 9:45 p.m., Monday March 18, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
At the time, Melendez was walking to a convenience store near his residence, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.
He was pronounced dead upon arriving at a local trauma center.
Melendez was struck by a 2006 Chrysler 300 driven by a 30-year-old Escondido man, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr said.
“He was not suspected of DUI and did not report any injuries,” Doerr said of the driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
