A traffic stop in San Jacinto today led to the arrests of a pair of suspected car thieves.

Peter Larry Herrera, 40, and Sandy Gonzales, 28, both of Hemet, were arrested on suspicion of auto theft and identity theft after they were stopped by a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy in the area of Lake Park Drive and the Ramona Expressway.

According to sheriff’s officials, a deputy assigned to traffic enforcement stopped the suspects about 8 a.m. for an alleged violation and discovered the car they were in had been reported stolen by a resident of Menifee.

Herrera and Gonzales, who were also allegedly in possession of fraudulent identification, were taken into custody without incident.

Herrera was booked into the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta, with bail set at $5,000.

Gonzales was booked into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

Her bail information was not immediately available.
