Amber Nicole Bernardino, 21, was arrested in the 1100 block of Calle Rolph about 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

The night before, someone had reported that Bernardino allegedly stole a Lexus GS3 sedan on East Arenas Road, and knew the vehicle owner’s grandson, Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said.

About 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, an officer on patrol saw Bernardino allegedly driving the car in the 400 block of East Tahquitz Canyon Way. Bernardino began speeding away from the officer before he tried to stop the vehicle, going over 70 mph and “driving recklessly,” Kovaleff said.

The car was found about 10 minutes later in the 1100 block of Villa Francea, and a handgun and stolen property were inside, Kovaleff said.

Officers found Bernardino, who is a transient, in the 1100 block of Calle Rolph and arrested her, he said.

She was booked at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning and was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
