An investigation was under way today into the death of a 19-year-old sailor who was found with a gunshot wound aboard the San Diego- based USS Essex, Navy officials said.
The sailor, whose name was withheld, was found mortally wounded aboard the amphibious assault ship on the morning of Thursday March 21, according to a Navy statement.
She was taken from the ship to UC San Diego’s trauma center, where she died, Navy spokesman Rick Chernitzer told U-T San Diego.
The Navy declined to say whether the wound was self-inflicted or if foul play was suspected.

the military sure knows how to take care of their own / LET’S SEE if the REAL truth comes out
She was a beautiful girl and a great friend.
Weisner, you’re a freaking tool. Let me guess, you have a suspicion about what “really” happened. Some kind of conspiracy right? Idiot.
Could be suicide? Terrible thing to happen on a ship and I wonder how she got ahold of the gun? I thought they kept them locked up and there are very few even then?
If someone did murder her I hope they are apprehended soon. Shouldnt be too difficult to know who was onboard at the time.
Rip and God Bless her family and friends during this horrible time.
Suicide is so selfish. Sad but sadder for her family and friends
It is a very sad situation for all…. And you ask how did she get hold of a weapon!?? Well if you knew the facts, and where she worked at in the ship you would know…
