Sgt. Lisa McConnell said that officers attempted to stop 35-year-old Anestacio De La Cruz just after 8 p.m., at the intersection of Avalon Street and Rubidoux Boulevard. At first, De La Cruz stopped, then sped off.

The suspect eventually abandoned the pick-up truck and ran off.

“While conducting a search of the area, De La Cruz was located in the driver’s seat of a red BMW in the 3900 block of Rubidoux Boulevard,” Sgt. McConnell said.

Officers fired at De La Cruz when he drove at them as they approached the vehicle.

After a short pursuit, the suspect lost control of the BMW and smashed into a pole at the intersection of 42nd Street and Pacific Avenue.

He was detained and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

“Per department policy the officer will be placed on paid administrative leave,” Sgt. McConnell added.

No officers were injured in the incident.
