Lake Elsinore City Council approved the application to receive more than $215,000 of Community Development Block Grant funds for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, on Tuesday during their city council meeting.
The application to receive federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development was approved 5-0 per staff recommendation for project improvements throughout the city.
The area’s nonprofit agency, H.O.P.E., Helping Our People in Elsinore, expected to receive $40,000 in funding to assist with their food pantry and other programs available for those in need in the Lake Elsinore area, but will receive $17,483. The Assistance League of Temecula Valley requested $10,000, but was not granted funding through the city’s block grant. City spokesman Mark Dennis said some agencies did not receive the requested funding mostly due to keeping the funding local.
Public facility projects, which include sidewalk improvements, Whiskers Fishing Beach improvements, Senior Center upgrades and Lake Community Center phase completions are proposed to receive a total of $110,177 in funds. Code enforcement will allocate a total of $75,000 and public service programs will allocate a total of $30,144. Out of $30,000 requested from The Boys and Girls Club of Southwest County, $12, 661 were granted to support the Before-and-After-School program at Alberhill Ranch Clubhouse for underserved youth in the city.
The $52,177 allocated for sidewalk improvements are targeted for enhancements of areas within Elsinore Elementary and Elsinore Middle School, $50,000 allocated for code enforcement will go toward program continuation of identifying substandard properties and buildings throughout the city’s block grant designated areas, which will work with owners to bring properties to compliance.
The $20,000 fund disbursement for the Lake Community Center will assist with the center’s kitchen renovation and other center improvements.
Disbursement of funds begins July 1, 2010.
