A brush fire in a dry creek bed in Pedley spread to more than an acre today, keeping fire crews busy trying to contain the blaze.

The brusher was reported at 12:33 p.m. in the area of Felspar and 56th streets, where the Pyrite channel runs to the Santa Ana River bottom, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The area is apparently occupied by squatters, and sheriff’s deputies were called in to help evacuate them.

Deputies also closed access to streets leading into the area.

County fire Capt. Laura Germany said six fire engines were sent to the fire. Riverside Fire Department crews were also standing by in case additional support was needed.

There was no word on how the fire started or when it might be contained.
