A 50-year-old man from Newport Beach was killed when a Toyota Corolla slammed head-on into his motorcycle and he was thrown, a California Highway Patrol officer said today.

Robert Grice Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, reported about 8:45 a.m. Sunday on the Ortega Highway, about a mile east of the Orange County Line.

Grice was riding his Ducati Demosedici east on the Ortega when a Corolla traveling west swerved to the left and struck Grice’s bike, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Ron Thatcher.

Rob Grice is my son-in-law. The finest husband, father, friend and “Man” I have ever met in my life. God clearly raised the bar for masculane behavior when Rob was was put on this earth. Rob was kind, strong, soft, quiet, bosisterous, fun-loving in the most serene and sometimes surreal way imaginable.
He was tragically taken from us by a criminal act of a driver on Ortega Hwy at about 8:45am Sunday morning. As the facts emerge after through investigation, the odds are the female driver of a Toyota was distracted, drifted off of the right side of the road, over steered and veered into my beautiful son-in-law, loving and caring father and perfect husband.
Rob did everything he could to avoid the vehicle who was on the wrong side of the road, leaving him no space to escape though the facts show he tried vainly to avoid the out of control motorist who was taking dead aim at him with no way for him to escape on this treachorous strech of highway.

Our world has lost a very special person.

Rob will always be in our hearts and will always be remembered with a lot of love. I know how much his daughters meant to him. They were the sunshine in his life! He couldn’t stop talking about them. This is a huge loss for his family friends and everyone who had the honor of knowing him. My life will be forever blessed for having known this amazing man. My prayers are with family and friends. This is nothing but a loss for everyone!

My heart goes out to the Grice’s and all who knew him! This was an unfair and shocking tragedy that took the life of a wonderful person! My parents and I have had the privilege to know Rob & his family for years and it is indeed a loss for everyone! I will keep Rob and his family in my prayers. He will always be fondly remembered!

Condolences to his family and friends. I have read various posts. Also, which seems questionable is the woman that arrived at the scene, and removed his helmet. The rumor is she was not a nurse. Regardless, I thought… one should never move or disturb a accident victim, cover them for shock while qualified personnel with proper support for the neck, spinal chord injuries, punctured areas or what ever could possibly be wrong need supported accordingly. Bless the family, my children loss their father in a accident as well.
